Y-kiki’s Response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

As we continue to monitor the news of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in our region, we want to provide an update on our plans and actions to maintain a healthy environment across the Y-kiki family.

Currently, both Y-kiki West County and Y-kiki South County remain open to serve our community. This situation is evolving daily, and we are continuing to monitor changes and to adjust our operations and practices as necessary. Any decisions we make will continue to place the health and safety of our staff and customers first.

Health officials continue to advise us to focus on the importance of being vigilant in our efforts to prevent the spread of illness. We can all do our part in that, and you can help us by following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water, and for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Practice good cough and sneeze etiquette.
  • Stay home if you feel ill.

We have instituted additional cleaning protocols to give focused attention to surfaces, equipment and common areas. At both stores, you can expect to see our staff cleaning frequently touched surfaces more often, including door knobs, light switches, display counters, bathrooms, display masks and our kitchen area. We are actively reinforcing the preventative measures outlined by the CDC and ensuring that hand sanitizing pumps and Clorox wipes are available at both locations… as well as good ‘ol soap & water. In addition, it will be our policy to dunk second stage regulators and any masks/snorkels into a bleach/water solution at the pool and then rinse both in fresh water to ensure students are confident our gear is properly disinfected. We’ll do the same for any Annie mannequins. This is a recommendation as outlined by the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/infectioncontrol/guidelines/disinfection/disinfection-methods/chemical.html

We have access to three pools remaining open to the public. For students that want to complete scheduled courses, we are proceeding as scheduled. For this weekend’s classes, we’ve contacted all students advising of any location/timing changes. We will also reschedule any student that is interested in doing so.

We’ve canceled Scuba Crew 555’s “Bring A Friend” event for Sat., March 21; our Truli Wetsuit Pop-Up event for Sat., March 21 and we will reschedule the BSA Merit Badge Workshop slated for March 18 at our South County location. Our LDA: Bonne Terre Mine event is still taking place Sat., March 21. If you’re interested in going, there is still space. Please contact West End Diving to register: (314) 209-7200.

Per the CDC:

Can the COVID-19 virus spread through pools and hot tubs?

There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

We will continue to operate on a normal schedule. We will continue to communicate to our customers the need to follow the safety recommendations outlined by the CDC, to practice social distancing, and to ask students/customers to stay home if they consider themselves at higher-risk or if they are not feeling well.

Relevant updates will be communicated to you through email and through our Social Media sites. You can find additional resources and information on the Coronavirus here:
